Meet Our Panelists

Ruth Fajardo, is a mother of four from Honduras. In the U.S., Ruth faced many challenges, but her life took a pivotal turn when she benefited from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, providing her with the opportunity to work legally and pursue her educational goals. Through her tenacity and hard work, Ruth became an assistant manager at Amazon. Not stopping at professional success, she is currently completing her bachelor's degree in economics at UConn.

Oscar Guerra, PhD, is an Emmy® award-winning director, researcher, and educator. As an Associate Professor of Film and Video at UConn and a producer at PBS FRONTLINE, Dr. Guerra’s focus is storytelling that promotes critical thinking and social investment. He produces media that provides a way for underrepresented groups to share and disseminate counter-stories, contradict dominant and potentially stereotypical narratives, and strengthen their voices and identities.

Renee Redman has three decades of experience as a litigator and immigration attorney. She worked as a commercial litigator in New York City for eight years before leaving to work in the non-profit sector. She also taught immigration law as an adjunct professor at UConn and Quinnipiac Schools of Law. In 2011, she opened her own immigration law firm in New Haven, where she handles cases focusing on asylum, family-based immigration, deferred action, waivers, and removal cases.

Sarah Rendon Garcia, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Human Development and Family Sciences at UConn, Storrs and will moderate our panel. Her research focuses on the ways children and adults in mixed-status immigrant families from Latin America understand what it means for them and/or their family members to be undocumented in the U.S. Sarah received her PhD in Human Development, Learning, and Teaching at Harvard University.
