New TPS for Haiti authorized

The government announced that Haiti will be redesignated for TPS (Temporary Protected Status) as a result of conditions in the country. Haitians in the U.S. as of May 21, 2021 will be able to apply for TPS for two years and apply for work permits. Haitians currently covered by previous TPS designations will be able to renew their status.

The Haitian TPS designation comes in response to Haiti’s social unrest, increase in human rights abuses, crippling poverty, and lack of basic resources which have been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic according to DHS Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas.

Details of the program, including the time period during which Haitians in the U.S. can apply, will become available once the government publishes the regulations in the Federal Register.
