In Stamford — city, state leaders pledge support, safety to immigrant community

STAMFORD — Carla Esquivel, who came from Guatemala 20 years ago, knows what it’s like to feel like a stranger.
But what she feels in 2019 is something new, a continual state of fear, especially in the wake of the El Paso shooting last weekend where 22 people were killed and the shooter — a 21-year-old white man — was targeting “Mexicans” according to an El Paso Police Department affidavit.
