$10,000 Grant from Fairfield County Community Foundation Supports Summer Reading Program

IMG_4982

Neighbors Link Stamford has received a $10,000 grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation to support the summer reading program.

The summer reading program brings teachers from Stamford elementary schools to the Neighbors Link site to work with bilingual students who want to improve their reading and comprehension skills. Students are grouped by school grade, and the teachers select an appropriate book for each group. Students and teachers discuss each chapter of the book after reading it, extending the learning experience to the children’s everyday lives. While the students work entirely in English, parents who attend sessions with their children receive copies of the book translated into Spanish so that they can talk together about the book after the class ends.

“We at Neighbors Link Stamford are so grateful to The Fairfield County Community Foundation for their continuing support of our programs. We truly appreciate their partnering with us in our efforts to help immigrants join our communities in productive, healthy ways.”
